The Wolverines and Harpooners won their championship games by double-digit margins by using their strong defense to set up their offense for success.

Point Hope’s Jadyn Lane looks for a teammate to pass the ball to as Wrangell’s Liana Carney attempts to block her in the Class 2A girls state championship game at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage on Saturday, March 19, 2022.

“Our boys had a tough loss yesterday and we just wanted to come out strong and represent the community and bring it home for our town,” Rock said. “We just wanted to bring some joy and something positive.”Point Hope’s Virginia Teayoumeak, 31, douses her coach with water alongside teammates as they celebrate their win over Wrangell in the Class 2A girls state championship basketball game at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage on Saturday, March 19, 2022.

“It was mostly team work and passing the ball around and our fake and shoot,” Nash said. “This is super big because we don’t really get opportunities out of Point Hope and don’t really get seen.” Point Hope’s Ashanti Melik, 34, covers her eyes as she celebrates with teammates after they defeated Wrangell in the Class 2A girls state championship basketball game at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage on Saturday, March 19, 2022. Ninilchik’s 78-52 blowout of the Metlakatla Chiefs on Saturday night didn’t mark the first title in history of the Wolverines boys basketball team. It was third in the last six years under head coach Nick Finley.

After the Wolverines hit a cold streak from the field in the second quarter, Metlakatla made things interesting by tying the game up at 23 just before halftime and trailed by just two points at the break. The Chiefs opened the second half with a 6-0 run and took their first lead of the game on a layup by Shayne Anderson.
