Even average levels were found to be more than triple legal limits
Watford General Hospital's maternity ward has had almost 50 times the legal limit of birth gas in the air.
revealed that the average level of nitrous oxide floating around in the delivery suite between February 21 and 24 last year was 350 parts per million - well above the safe limit of 100ppm.Known as gas and air, Entonox is a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas used to reduce pain during labour. Mothers breathe it in through a mask or mouthpiece and it has no harmful side effects for them or their baby.
