No. 6 Texas had no answers for Kansas State's sizzling offense Tuesday night at the Moody...

Texas guard Sir'Jabari Rice drives to the basket against Kansas State forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin during the second half of Tuesday night’s game in Austin.AUSTIN — Texas entered the new year regarded as one of the toughest defensive teams in the country.

The Wildcats treated No. 6 Texas like an overmatched scout team, scoring with ruthless efficiency from all three levels in a stunning offensive explosion. The Longhorns scored in bunches, too. But they couldn’t string together nearly enough stops to claw out of the hole they dug themselves early on. “Texas was really good down the stretch,” Kansas State guard Markquis Nowell said. “You gotta give them credit. But I feel like my guys competed at a very high level, made some big-time shots.”Then the Wildcats directed their energy toward breaking down the Longhorns on the perimeter and finishing at the rim, scoring four straight layups to take a 12-3 lead they’d never relinquish.

“We didn’t do a great job in the first half,” Terry said. “Anytime you don’t play at the level you need to play on the defensive end over the first 20 minutes it’s going to be really tough for you. I give our guys a lot of credit to put us in a position to have an opportunity to make it a possession game. We were able to do that a few times tonight, but we just weren’t able to get over the hump.”

With about 2:50 remaining, Nowell sized up Carr at the top of the key. The 5-foot-8 guard feinted toward the lane, paused, created separation with a step-back and uncorked a high-arching 3 over Carr’s outstretched arms.
