Freshman Dylan Mazzarella
A small, quick, heady player, Mazzarella read the defense well off the bench, getting into space and nimbly getting around defenders, capitalizing off of how they played.
Mazzarella has played in close, hight stakes games in his young career, but opening your high school career against one of your most heated rivals in Red Bull Arena takes things to another level. “It was motivational for us as a team,” senior midfielder and captain Shea Coughlin said, knowing the program is in good hands. “It really speaks to the underclassmen on the team. We have a lot of potential and a lot of upcoming talent, so I’m really excited for that.”
“We tell them they have to do three things on the bench, and they did those three things,” Donovan said. “Cheer your team, be ready if called upon and analyze the position you might be going in for. And they all did that tonight.” The new identity for Delbarton didn’t play perfectly, though. Two of Seton Hall Prep’s three goals came on penalty kicks, a product of the physical tact the game took from the opening whistle.
But it’s too early to anoint them Morris County or North, Non-Public A or NJAC American Division champions, just yet and Donovan knows it.
