Thursday's storms produced a tornado warning but no new flooding issues for Vermont. But officials say it's still too soon to get complacent, as a new round of storms in Sunday's forecast could bring a new round of problems.
"On Sunday, unfortunately, there's another chance for heavy rain statewide," Gov. Phil Scott said on Thursday."I know this is hard news for many, and folks will want to think this is over as soon as the weather breaks on Saturday, but it's critical that Vermonters understand that we need to remain vigilant and prepared."“We've seen many pictures on social media of kids swimming in floodwaters.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner investigated the death, in cooperation with local police, Bosma said in a news release late Thursday afternoon. He said Vermonters are urged to continue to take extra care as they return to their homes and repair damage. Other New England states to the south are also continuing to dry out, including Connecticut, where officials warned boaters and others about dangerous debris in the Connecticut River, including large trees. A dock with several boats attached was washed away in Glastonbury, just south of Hartford, and was seen floating down the river a few towns away. Some flooding was also reported along the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts as well.
Scott submitted a request for a major disaster declaration to President Joe Biden. “It's separate from, and in addition to, the federal emergency declaration the president already signed” on Tuesday, he said. If approved, the declaration would provide federal support for recovering communities.
