But he insisted it was right to hold wages down temporarily in order to avoid a wage-price spiral which would risk inflation running out of control for several years. “So I know that people will find that frustrating. But I’ve got to be realistic with people about where we are. I think – I’m pretty certain of this – that our inflationary pressures will abate over time, and things will start to get better.”
Chancellor Rishi Sunak has warned ministers they cannot expect extra funding despite the pressures of inflation which have made workers and unions demand higher salary increases to avoid a fall in living standards.
