The noise generated by cicadas is another indication that it's summer in San Antonio.
Carolyn Kaster/Associated PressThe insects are known for their bombastic noise-making abilities during dusk. They emerge during the summer months and typically peak in July.
"They vibrate their tymbals — two organs that look like stretched drum heads located on either side of their abdomen — to make a very loud sound. In fact, their abdomens are almost hollow in order to allow the sound created by the vibrating tymbals to be amplified," Beckham wrote. If you are new to the area, the noises can be jarring. On Tuesday, a Reddit user who goes by oldmanlikesguitars took to reddit.com/r/sanantonio/ to ask what was making the strange, loud sound.Carolyn Kaster/Associated Press
