The work is part of an exhibit at the Amon Carter Museum of American ArtFor many of the nation’s 9.7 million people of Native American heritage, yesterday was a national day of mourning, a time to reflect on the plight of their ancestors in the years following the arrival of English colonists near Plymouth in the early 17th century.

“Speaking with Light” isn’t the only art exhibition in November in recognition of Native American Heritage Month. But this one caught our attention because of its mission to undo stereotypes many of us may have about Native Americans, stereotypes often perpetuated innocently but, nonetheless, unfortunately at Thanksgiving.

While that version does recount a gathering of thanksgiving among pilgrims in Plymouth Colony and a group of food-bearing native tribal members led by Massasoit, it often omits that the peaceful existence between the two was short-lived. And in the following years, advocates say, native people were needlessly slaughtered.
