Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, a 2000 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, will be guest conductor for his composition, “Clans,” when the Akron Symphony Orchestra opens its 70th season Sept. 29 at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron.
Wilkins said Tate is dedicated to bringing both his Chickasaw heritage and his classical music training to a larger public.
“Bartok had a tremendous influence in 20th-century music because he brought folk music from Hungary and from other regions in Europe onto the classical music stage, and he melded the two,” Wilkins said. “Jerod has expressed his admiration for Bartok and how he did that, and is similar.”“He was really the first ethnomusicologist of his own people,” he said.
“Because of that, I love teaching composition to kids because I get to impart that knowledge to them and play them examples and show them what American Indian artists and European artists have been doing.” Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, far right, a 2000 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, taking part in performances of his own music with the CIM New Music Ensemble in Mixon Hall at in November 2021. “It’s a composition about the legend of Kokumthena , grandmother of the Shawnee, who are aboriginal to the Ohio Territory,” he said. “The work is sung entirely in the Shawnee language.” In January 2022, The Washington Post selected him as one of “22 for ‘22: Composers and performers to watch this year.”
