No field goals in final 3 minutes spell doom for Irish, as Red Raiders advance to play Duke
After all Notre Dame had been through in the previous 95 hours or so – the double-overtime game Wednesday in Dayton, the 1,900-mile flight west to barely beat sunrise on the West Coast, winning a game the next afternoon and then facing another two days later against the nation’s best defensive team – the Irish found themselves ready to live out coach Mike Brey’s premonition.
Kevin Obanor, a senior transfer from Oral Roberts, led all players with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and even more impressive was that seven of the latter came on the offensive end. Two of those, in particular, plus a pair of defensive plays by senior Marcus Santos-Silva, decided the game. With Notre Dame holding that 52-49 lead and the clock ticking under 2:00, Tech’s Adonis Arms missed a layup but Obanor grabbed the rebound. His follow shot was wild but Arms caught it and was fouled. He made both free throws.
The Irish had one more chance, but again Wesley was stymied in the lane and his wild pass went out of bounds. McCullar made two more free throws and the lead was five with 40 seconds to play.
