David Townsend, the only man to win NCT's Bus Driver of the Year award twice, continues to provide excellent service on the 26 bus route in Nottingham.

As the 26 bus bumps and trundles over the roads of Nottingham city, many getting on and off have no idea of the royalty with which they share the ground. This isn't any old bus driver at the helm.Today's trip - the 20.10, which takes around an hour to reach the terminus - is David's last of the night. But he's cheerful as always - and welcoming to all those who arrive for the journey with him.

He loves driving so much, he says, that if, one day, a passenger asked him to carry on at Southwell all the way to Whitby, he would - with pleasure. And, after achieving his "dream" and qualifying as a bus driver in 2007 - he'd previously driven heavy goods vehicles - he paid thousands of pounds out of his own pocket for training courses in safe driving - just to make sure he could provide the best service he could for his passengers.

As the bus carries on along the route, from the city into the dark, winding country roads, David's commitment to his craft never wanes. His head bobs and weaves like a boxer as he flits between mirrors and blind spots, looking out for hazards and checking the position of his bus on road. As planned, nine minutes later, the bus pulls off again. David - once a pig farmer and a social worker before his foray into public transport - has been doing this route since he started 17 years ago, but he still loves it just as much.

If he could choose some background music, it'd be Chuck Berry, he says. But he's not too fussed about the relative silence. David admits he has a good relationship with many passengers. Some, he says, are the sons and daughters of people he looked after in his previous job in social services: a "past life", as he puts it.
