After attending the opening night performance of the play’s 2022 run, the appeal is obvious. Staged five times a week at the Mimi Ohio Theatre in Playhouse Square through December 23, the show remains that magical experience you remember.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For many families in Northeast Ohio, the holidays don’t begin until you’ve seen Great Lakes Theater’s production of “A Christmas Carol.” Cleveland’s classic company has been staging the beloved Charles Dickens story for 34 years, attracting over 800,000 people since its debut in 1988.
Suddenly, we’re in London circa 1864 and introduced to a grumpy old miser called Ebenezer Scrooge . Within a few minutes, he dismisses a friendly invitation from his nephew Fred , rebuffs a couple of charity men and only reluctantly gives Bob Cratchit the next day off for Christmas. Each action is accompanied by a stern “Bah humbug!”
You know what happens next. Scrooge is scared straight. But familiarity in this case breeds not contempt, but comfort. Even though you can see it coming a mile away, there is something inspiring about the way he realizes the error of his ways and the joy he experiences as a result.
