Fifteen NBA teams have two or more “stars” under the league’s new Player Participation Policy. The defending champions aren’t one of them.
Kick back and relax, Jamal Murray. Go dip your feet in the pool a little while longer, Nikola Jokic. While the NBA community clamors over the league’s new rules designed to regulate exploitation of load management, the one star-studded team spared of the headache for now is, ironically, the team that just won the championship.
The headlining directive: Starting this season, teams cannot rest multiple healthy star players in the same game. Teams also must ensure that stars are available for in-season tournament games and games broadcast on national television. Stars cannot sit out only road games for load management; the league will monitor for a balance between road and home games rested. In fact, healthy players resting a game are required to be present and visible to fans under the new guidelines.
In Los Angeles, LeBron James and Anthony Davis are stars. In Sacramento, De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are. Memphis has Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. Dallas has Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Boston has Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Philly has Joel Embiid and James Harden. It might be in Murray’s best financial interests to change that. The Denver point guard is arguably the best player in the NBA who doesn’t currently meet star criteria. Thanks in large part to his 2021 torn ACL, he’s still pursuing his first career All-Star or All-NBA recognition. If he can achieve the latter this season and if he forgoes signing the three-year, $145 million extension for which he’s eligible by Oct.
