Bay FC, the NWSL’s newest expansion team, hired former Levi Strauss & Co executive Brady Stewart as its first CEO, the club announced. Stewart hopes to grow the team into a “global brand,” she tells itsmeglinehan.

With the club’s $53 million expansion fee and $125 million total investment, the expectations for Bay FC are, understandably, going to be sky-high for its launch on and off the field. The club’s announcement of Stewart as CEO is the first major step into building out the front office and business side of the team — and her vision revolves around capturing the Bay Area first, then building their global aspirations upon their local foundation.

Stewart also reiterated the desire to build a “best-in-class” organization while gaining global recognition. “Obviously, we have more to come on the sporting side and we are going to deliver true excellence on the field, with the entire organization on the sporting side,” she said. “On the business side, what I’m running against is building out the organization. We want to bring in people who are just as passionate about the team and the opportunity as everyone who is already involved.”

On balancing global aspirations with building a local audience, Stewart added: “The Bay is our home. The Bay is where we are rooted. The Bay is our community. It’s concentric circles, you start at the first goal: to be an iconic brand in the Bay Area, to be successful on the pitch, be connected in our communities, give back to the communities we’re a part of, express our values as a team in our communities. Then we go for the global stuff.
