The Senate approved a measure requiring an automatic shutoff feature for any electric space heaters sold in the state.
The bill was one of a handful of fire-safety measures the Senate approved Monday, including one that would boostfor the first time since 1987. Among other increases, each “immediately hazardous” violation in a building with at least 10 units would be subject to a fine of up to $1,000 a day until it’s corrected — up from the current $125.deadly Jan.
“These measures will improve the safety of all New York housing and protect families,” said Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers. “We discuss all issues with our conference,” Michael Whyland, a spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, D-Bronx, said when asked if the measures will be put to a vote.
