The NYPD released its updated crime stats for last month, indicating an overall citywide 58.7% rise in crime compared to the same period last year.
“The men and women of the New York City Police Department are proactively addressing the deep-rooted causes of criminal behavior,” said NYPD Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell in a statement. “The NYPD will never relent, and the department has made far too much progress over the decades—and invested far too much in the communities it serves—to fall back by any measure. New Yorkers deserve better.”
The suspect was Muniz’s boyfriend, 34-year-old Caleb Duberry, who was found dead in his nearby apartment in the Bronx from an assumed suicide. A source who grew up in the same community as Duberry said that Duberry had always been “in and out of prison” and had allegedly been struggling with a drug addiction as of late.
Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams headed to Washington, D.C. to present his “Blueprint to End Gun Violence” to Congress on Tuesday, March 8. The small dip in gun crime would suggest that there is hope on the horizon for his tactics.
