He also lauded the diversity of the protests, which he said are a “more representative cross-section of America” compared to protest movements in the 1960s, and argued that majority national support for them in spite of incidents of violence “wouldn’t have existed 30, 40, 50 years ago.” He also pushed for protesters to get involved in democracy at the local level, pointing out that the reforms they’re pushing “has to take place in more than 19,000 local municipalities.”
