Lucas’ original idea for how Obi-Wan and Anakin met in Star Wars was vastly different, yet Obi-Wan still carried the blame for how Anakin turned out.
In the original Star Wars trilogy, Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi seems to blame himself for Anakin Skywalker’s descent into becoming Darth Vader. Even before creating the prequels, George Lucas thought of Obi-Wan as a character who dealt with an enormous weight on his shoulders. Obi-Wan’s guilt over failing Anakin is what drives his character to watch over Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. In a way, keeping Luke safe and then teaching him the ways of the Force is Obi-Wan’s way of getting redemption.
Return of the Jedi hinted at a different prequel story for Obi-Wan and Anakin. Instead of meeting Anakin in his youth on Tatooine, Obi-Wan and Anakin met as adults during The Clone Wars. In this version, Obi-Wan’s hubris still leads him to take Anakin under his wing and train him as a Jedi. In other words, until Lucas added Qui-Gon’s character in the prequels, Obi-Wan was the one who made the decision to train Anakin.
Obi-Wan isn’t to blame for Anakin getting into the Jedi Order, but he is to blame for how he trained Anakin. At first, Anakin and Obi-Wan seem like the perfect match as Padawan and Master. Both are bold, headstrong Jedi who jump straight into action. Both of them often bottle up their feelings and rarely share them. But Anakin’s impulsiveness is balanced out by Obi-Wan’s levelheadedness. They are both able to learn something from each other during their time as Padawan and Master.
Obi-Wan did the best he could in training Anakin, but he handled Anakin’s marriage as poorly as possible. Rather than confronting his Padawan, he let Anakin sweep the secret under the rug. Years earlier, Obi-Wan had dealt with similar feelings for the Duchess Satine of Mandalore. It’s possible he let Anakin live a secret life with Padmé because Obi-Wan wanted to live on Mandalore with Satine.
