Oceanside firefighters battling brush fire near freeways, homes [Breaking]
Firefighters battled a vegetation fire late Wednesday night in Oceanside, knocking down the flames as they threatened homes in an area off state Route 76 and Interstate 5, authorities said.
The blaze was reported around 10:30 p.m. in the San Luis Rey riverbed near the transition between I-5 and SR-76, a little south of the main gate into Camp Pendleton, according to the California Highway Patrol and Oceanside Police Department. No homes were damaged, but several on San Luis Rey Drive just east of I-5 were evacuated, Oceanside police Lt. John McKean said.
Witnesses had told Highway Patrol dispatchers that when the blaze first broke out, it was moving up a hill and “getting really close” to houses in the area. Police later asked people to avoid the area. It was not immediately clear how long it took for firefighters to control the blaze, but McKean said that as of midnight Thursday, the evacuated residents had been let back in their homes and there were no road closures in the area.Fire crews remained at the scene early Thursday continuing to extinguish hot spots and monitor for flareups, McKean said.
