UPDATE: A man is dead after being shot by police after he, allegedly, struck two state troopers with his car on I-95 in South Philadelphia on Sunday morning.
An investigation is ongoing after a deadly police involved shooting caused I-95 in South Philadelphia to be closed to traffic early Sunday.
According to police, the roadway was closed near highway exit 20, under the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial, after a man was killed when, police said, a state trooper fired after the victim of the shooting hit two troopers with his vehicle. Officials said the shooting occurred at around 3:24 a.m. after police had responded to a report of people illegally blocking the roadway.
Law enforcement officials claim that vehicles were reported to be"racing, doing 'burnouts' and 'drifting'," in the middle of the highway.Sign up for NBC Philadelphia newsletters.Also, officials said that, prior to the arrival of troopers on the scene, police received a report of shots fired in that area.
Upon arrival, officials said that troopers with the PA State Police, found"a significant number of vehicles illegally blocking the roadway" while other vehicles did burnouts and drifted in the roadway and, pedestrians were amassed along the highway to spectate.
