Ohio medical marijuana patients are happier with the state's program than they once were, but they continue to face barriers to access.
While the price of plant product in Ohio declined 17% during the past year, costs in neighboring Michigan dropped even further, making a trip out-of-state more appealing than buying from an Ohio dispensary. During a 13-month period, an Ohio patient on average paid $4.08 more per gram than someone in Michigan.
Ohio has collected more than $132 million in revenue from the program since it started in January 2019, including $22 million in patient and caregiver fees. About 60% of respondents lived within a 15-mile radius of a dispensary, while 12% lived more than 30 miles away.Regulators hope plans to increase the number of dispensaries in Ohio will improve patient access.this year through a lottery that would more than double the number of dispensaries, provided they all become operational. The provisional license requires all prospective businesses to undergo a state review before they open their doors.
However, the legislation doesn't include the top policy priorities of patients. The Drug Enforcement and Policy Center survey found most respondents would like the state to permit home delivery and allow patients to grow their own plants.
