We're talking Old Brooklyn and Brooklyn Centre, two of Cleveland's historic neighborhoods on the South Side.
The Broolyn Centre and Old Brooklyn neighorhoods of Cleveland.James Fish, a white pioneer from Connecticut, settled in what is now known as Brooklyn Centre in 1812. Cabins were originally built where Denison Avenue and West 25th Street are now, according to the National Register of Historic Places. Back then, the western area spanning across Old Brooklyn, Brooklyn Center and nearby suburbs Brooklyn Heights and Brooklyn was known as Brooklyn Township.
In 1838, the Ohio legislature passed an act incorporating the southern part of the township as Brighton Village, but in February 1839 the act was repealed. Fifty years later in 1889, the 1,000-person community filed a petition and incorporated it as South Brooklyn. South Brooklyn, which is now known as Old Brooklyn, was annexed to the city of Cleveland in 1905 and its boundaries were set by the city in 1927.
Several Revolutionary War veterans, including Moses Fish’s father, Ebenezer Fish Sr., are buried in Denison Cemetery, also known as Brooklyn Centre Burying Ground, near Denison Avenue and West 23rd Street.
