A set of bagpipes that are believed to be the oldest in the world have been put up on display ahead of World Bagpipe Day on Sunday. The pipes, which are being displayed at Morpeth Chantry in Northumberland, are thought to have originally been owned by King Louis XIV of France.

The pipes, which are being displayed at Morpeth Chantry in Northumberland , are thought to have originally been owned by King Louis XIV of France.
The discovery of the bagpipe family was made when a collector found a painting of the French king in the Palace of Versailles. In 1987, the pipes were relocated to Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum. According to the curator, the instrument was played in the late-17th century and is winded by means of bellows operated under the player’s right arm, obviating the vulgarity of blowing up the bag by mouth
