the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recognized it as a historic siteGrave sites at Olivewood Cemetery are shown on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022 in Houston. Caretakers at the historically Black cemetery are accusing a neighboring contractor of tearing down a newly installed fence and building a wall footer on Olivewood property.
The remnants of the wrought-iron fence lay stacked against a tree Monday morning, as construction workers continued adding cement to the new retaining wall along the border of the two properties. A superintendent at the site deferred comment to Oxberry Group. "I understand they're upset, and it was a misunderstanding. The general contractor maybe should have reached out to us first, but for sure they're our neighbors and we want to keep them happy," Jamea said.
Williams said the Descendants group consulted a 2009 survey of the property before building the fence and members believed they had placed the fence directly on the property line. Jamea provided photos which he said show the fence to be on Oxberry's side of the property marker by a hair's breadth, according to a survey Oxberry had done before they started construction.
