Three days before Columbus holds one of the nation's largest pride parades, Ohio GOP lawmakers merged two controversial bills on gay and trans rights into one.
Dr. Christopher Bolling, a recently retired pediatrician from Cincinnati who represents the 2,900 members of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said in prepared testimony that in Ohio, "children’s hospitals do not perform gender-affirming surgeries on minors, nor do they refer those patients to their providers. We have no objection to the legislature banning gender-affirming surgeries on minors.
But he said he opposes the bill because it "inserts legislators as the expert in transgender medicine in Ohio in opposition to prevailing medical standards on how to manage gender dysphoria." Patricia Christoff, a registered Ohio pharmacist for 34 years with a specialty in pediatrics, said she supports the bill because little or no research has been conducted on the drugs often used in transitioning the gender of a juvenile.
"Because there is a paucity of registered clinical trials and resulting data to support the safe and effective use of ... use of such agents lacking legal and ethical investigative oversight in this setting, must be considered experimental," said the pharmacists, who retired in 2020.
