In an IndyStar spotlight letter published almost two decades ago, I passionately rebutted columnist Mona Charen’s opinion that it was wasted time and tax dollars to teach African history in public schools. In my response, I heralded the amazing transformation in the self-regard of children in full discovery of the staggering magnitude of African and African American world contributions.
Since that letter, Barack Obama was elected twice to the presidency of the United States of America. Indiana Senate Enrolled Act 337 championed by Sen. Greg Taylor, mandated African American and other ethnic studies as high school course electives. Critical race theory laws slated to limit historical accounting of U.S. slavery and racism in public schools’ curricula swept successfully through the Indiana House, but were defeated in the Indiana Senate. The month of July and Aug.
The museum’s planned offering of a watermelon salad, crafted by an African American chef, served up what many African Americans perceived as a serious and injurious stereotypical slight. However, all this outrage has served to kindle several “what if’s” in my spirit.
I give thanks to God for my grandmother who insisted I stand up to every assault on my legitimacy as a contributor. Repeating more times than I can remember, “You have to pay more attention to the truth than the lies. Truth is, you are wonderfully and marvelously made. You got to find out all you can from whence you come.”
