Consequently, the legislation actually serves as a de facto referendum on Illinois’ energy future: Will it be renewable, as envisioned in the 2021 climate bill? Or will it be nuclear? This is really a question that all 12.7 million Illinoisans need to answer, not just the politically connected few.The legislative process failed to adequately examine, let alone answer, enormously important questions.
There are other renewables available that are already being constructed worldwide, which can provide jobs, system reliability, tax income and climate benefits before 2030, a date often linked to serious system reliability and energy availability issues in southern Illinois. 2030 is also the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s deadline for the U.S. and the world to totally remake its entire energy system or face the serious effects of climate change.
While the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers fights to keep jobs at today’s nuclear plants, a look at the statistics is astonishing: Renewable energy and energy efficiency create numbers of jobs far exceeding those of current nuclear plants, numbers reliably verified by history and current reality.
