Activist Opal Lee, called the Grandmother of the Juneteenth Movement, spoke Sunday at True Vision Church in Kirby.Opal Lee, the woman known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” spoke Sunday in Kirby about the need to teach love rather than hate in front of a packed sanctuary at True Vision Church.

The Rev. Michael Steve Brown introduced Lee to applause from more than 100 people and local dignitaries at the pulpit of the church on Ackerman Road.“My heart’s desire has been fulfilled,” Brown said. “We have royalty in the house today. She has blazed the trail!” Lee, a mother of four, was a teacher and counselor. Through her activism, she determined that Juneteenth was bigger than just Texas and that all Americans should celebrate the day. She said the holiday means freedom, not just for African Americans, but all races. Lee shared how on June 19, 1865, Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and his troops rode into Galveston Bay and announced the Civil War had ended and that President Abraham Lincoln had freed enslaved people two years earlier.
