Opinion: California must support arts and music education through Proposition 28 [Opinion]
Prop. 28’s push for arts education has great appeal. But here’s why it should be rejected.
” : Why is it that kids are always the ones who get left behind when someone raises a theoretical issue about state budgets? Arts and music education have been cut by school boards across California for years due to inadequate funding at the state level. In the 2019-20 school year, New York City provided about $30,000 per student, and, as a result, almost 80 percent of its schools have a full-time arts or music program. In Los Angeles, the numbers were $17,000 and barely 20 percent. It’s time that we do what’s right for kids. They deserve better.
As the author of Proposition 28, I know that it will create a brighter future for public school children in California and make sure the workforce in media, technology and entertainment better reflects the diversity in our schools.
