Opinion: California needs its trees and all the benefits they bring [Opinion]
Drought, disease and insects killed 36 million trees across California in 2022
” : Thank you for covering the devastation that our state’s natural environment is currently facing, and for connecting it to significant wildfire risk. Drought, disease and insects are all becoming increasingly problematic for our trees — and for us — as our planet warms. Our unhealthy reliance on fossil fuels and exploitation of natural resources have contributed to the drying up and contamination of water sources, the unearthing and spreading of more diseases, and an increase in pests.
While thinning out forests may be a short-term solution to the wildfire risk, this will not address the underlying issues causing that risk. In order to truly face the harm our trees are undergoing and eliminate this problem permanently, we must transition away from fossil fuels and toward a greener, renewable economy.
