," : Sometimes school districts need intervention and a thorough cleansing of the graft, cheating and scandals that have plagued them for years. Such was the case 75 miles away with the Beaumont Independent School District. Confronted with the hard facts that, for years, cheating on standardized tests wasn’t forbidden but encouraged; employees had stolen millions of dollars from district coffers by diverting payments to a shell company; and the administration turned its head as contractors fraudulently billed the district for services not provided, the Texas Education Agency finally took action and took over.
I personally purchased and delivered copy paper to schools in economically challenged areas of our city because the principal reached out and said they couldn’t get supplies from the administration. Once the TEA came in, a new diverse board consisting of some of the most reputable business, education and financial leaders in the community was put in place, and they did yeoman’s work to resurrect the district.
