Opinion: Social-emotional learning can help students balance mental, physical and social needs [Opinion]
This starts with having courageous conversations, inside or outside of the classroom, that guide students to a place of understanding that 1) we all need to acknowledge our mental health and 2) we can take care of it just like we take care of our physical health. Building up students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes when it comes to mental health can help them find balance and well-being while accentuating a student’s academic and career development.
Paired with authentic mentoring relationships with at least one trustworthy, caring adult on campus, social-emotional learning lessons are a starting point for building students up to reclaim their sense of self and their belief that they can make positive contributions to their communities. A significant number of the 21st-century skills related to workplace success are based not on a student’s knowledge but on a student’s ability to work cross-culturally by reflecting on differing perspectives and adjusting to ever-changing needs or situations.
