Also: Medicaid expansion would offer health insurance to the working poor in Texas, but...

," : Most people think that too many things are regulated until they realize, firsthand, that protections matter.

We have two recent examples: one close to home, the Kingwood water supply, and one far away, the Ohio train derailment. In hindsight we see the importance of protecting our bodies and our environment from hazards. Yet when elections are held, choices that rely on personality and colorful rhetoric seem to win the day.

No one wakes up and thinks that their water will be poisoned, their livelihood destroyed by environmental disasters or a loved one shot. When events like those happen close to home, laws to prevent them are no longer seen as regulations but as"protections." It's sad that the last election gave us the same kind of cross-talk, hollow promises and financial greed that causes harm that can last for years, if not decades. The no-regulations voices seem to have won the day while we are losing our lives and livelihoods because we aren't protected. We may not even know just how dramatic the harm is because sometimes we just don't want to accept the mistakes we have made.
