Tribalism fosters overzealous attachment to athletic teams but also can help build relationships and community.
Stanford guard Talana Lepolo, left, and guard Hannah Jump celebrate a 3-point basket against Oregon during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 women’s tournament Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Las Vegas. It’s March and my uncontrollable passion for college hoops is starting to simmer. Two teams I have loved for decades are headed for the big dance. But I’m troubled.
The all-encompassing us-versus-them mentality of team sports supersedes objectivity. When a referee calls a foul during a close game, coaches and fans often erupt. Accusations about bad officiating are not always about getting it wrong. Even when modern technologies provide clear evidence a tantrum was unjustified, coaches and fans rarely concede the call was correct. It’s about tribal support — not truth.
The pandemic and remote work further reduced the need to live or work around people outside our tribal boundaries. Being a centrist required listening to ideas from the left and right. Modern media relieve us from that burden.
