Opinion: Will San Diego commuters really walk a mile to use mass transit? [Opinion]

City approves controversial plan for high-rises farther from transit1. All trips have a to and from. You may live next to a transit line but that does not mean that you work near one or that a store or your doctor is near one.

2. San Diego is not flat. One mile up a hill can be daunting with an armload of groceries and a small child.3. Bus routes change. Houses once on a route can be left far from a stop when the line is rerouted.P.S. I would like to know if any of the San Diego City Council members have ever gone shopping using our transit system.I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the quote from San Diego City Council member Monica Montgomery Steppe claiming that “You will walk a mile to transit if you have to.

The council ignored study after scientific study that shows that people will not walk a mile to transit and most in that situation will make other choices. This is not a future we should be inventing as we attempt to transition to more successful transit usage and the development necessary to support it.

In the article, the opponents say walking a mile is too far and people won’t do it. If you don’t have a car or gas is too expensive, I bet more people than you think will make the trek to the stations. Walking on a brisk morning or a refreshing afternoon is relaxing, and I believe as people get into the habit, more will walk, if nothing more than to save money and for their health.
