Any optimism that existed to begin Tuesday's negotiating session between MLB and its...

JUPITER, Fla. — Any optimism that appeared to exist for an agreement between Major League Baseball and the players’ association faded Tuesday afternoon when, according to a league official, the players’ union took a “decidedly different” tone during bargaining — accusations a union official vehemently opposed.

The league will make its “best offer” prior to its self-imposed 5 p.m. Eastern time deadline to salvage opening day March 31, according to a spokesman. A union official said players are willing to negotiate longer than the owner-imposed deadline. It is unclear whether that will occur. Owners originally made the end of Monday their deadline for an on-time start to the season, but extended it to 5 p.m. TuesdayA league spokesman said it felt there was “a path to a deal” and both sides were “closing in on major issues.”Union officials tempered any optimism when those negotiations ended and reiterated their stance after Tuesday’s developments.

In a proposal to the league Tuesday afternoon, the union asked for a $725,000 minimum salary with increases throughout the life of the six-year collective bargaining agreement. The league proposed a $675,000 minimum with $10,000 increases each year. The league minimum was $570,500 in 2021, the lowest of the four major North American sports leagues.

The union offered competitive balance tax thresholds at $238 million in 2022, $244 million in 2023, $250 million in 2024, $256 million in 2025 and $263 million in 2026. Owners offered $220 million in 2022-24, $224 million in 2025 and $230 million in 2026.
