M.J. and A.J. Abarca regroup in a special victory in front of family and friends
M.J. Abarca set a never-to-be broken record when two years ago he and Otay Ranch teammate Emily Valencia captured the section mixed doubles tennis championship.
“In that first set I know I was nervous, and we didn’t stick to the game plan,” M.J. said. “That, and our opponents played very well. We were down 0-3 in like five minutes, which isn’t what we wanted. During the break between sets, I told my brother our best tennis was around the corner. “We do everything together,” M.J. said. “We know when one of us gets angry and loses focus. I’m the louder of the two. I only get mad when I set him up and he misses an easy shot, but that doesn’t last long. He gets mad sometimes, but I don’t let it bother me, I just let it roll off me and move on.
Although the brothers dominated as a doubles team this year, Mustangs coach Dan Woodard said they were good sports from the start. The section championships took so long, they forfeited their doubles match but were able to play mixed doubles where M.J.’s team beat A.J.’s for the title.A.J. actually has the higher Universal Tennis Rating at 10.2 to M.J.’s 9.8, but both plan to keep moving up.
