Teen Vogue reports from on the ground at the last Democratic debate.
, I thought maybe I’d elbow my way into the press scrum for a chance to talk to 2020 candidates. But instead I spent the evening of October 15 talking with young people at the event in Ohio, getting a sense of how the Buckeye State — famous for its swing-state reputation — was experiencing the latest presidential election cycle. What I saw indicated that Ohio’s political divides appear particularly contentious.
Westerville, Ohio, is my hometown. I graduated from Westerville North High School, attended Ohio State for two years, and my immediate and extended family still lives in the area. When I was a student, Ohio was a swing state, and while it hasn’t quite shaken that reputation, someif it’s becoming reliably Republican. For this reason, I was especially eager to talk to young Ohio voters about the issues that speak to them most directly during the Democratic debate at Otterbein University.
A group of Otterbein students — Kifah , Emma , Erin , and Jillian — all agreed that abortion access, the opioid crisis, and climate change were the biggest issues among younger Ohio voters. Emma expressed a desire to hear an “action plan,” and Jillian agreed, asking, “How are we going to do these things?” Kifah also said “student loans!” were a topic of conversation among her friends — but unfortunatelyEducation was a theme that kept popping up among young Ohio voters I spoke to.
