Data from the CDC showed a total of 5,003 children aged between 0-17 had been admitted to hospital between August 1 and August 13.
The figures represent an 10.5 percent change from the previous seven-day average recorded between July 31, 2021, and August 6, 2021.
Hospital admissions across the Sunshine State have risen in all age categories with those above 70 years old being the worst affected. According to the CDC, the age group saw a total of 80,290 admissions between August 1 and August 13 with an average of 583 elderly people being taken to hospital every day.
The COVID crisis has hit Florida hard since early July as the Delta variant continues its rapid spread across the state. Florida now leads the U.S. in new COVID-19 infections and has the highest rate of hospitalizations among children in the nation.
