22-year-old Kiara Burmeister moved to Austin a month ago, excited to live in a progressive city after growing up in Iowa and attending college in Nebraska. But she soon realized that state politics didn’t match those of the city — and used the event as an opportunity to register to vote here. “Moving to Austin, it is a blend of people, but at the same time, it’s still Texas,” Wilson said. “It’s been eye-opening moving here and having fundamentally different views … In my opinion, it’s disgusting what’s happening.”
“I just know that there’s millions of people just like myself who are like, ‘Oh, it's fine. I wasn't able to vote this time, but next time!’” she said. “Well, this is how this sh— happens, is so many of us make excuses for ourselves. And so the event was also for myself to truly get involved. I feel like I'm just now starting to find my voice.”
