Dylan Cease is among the 17 pitchers on roster; team will have to trim four pitchers, one position player by March 20
The Padres brought 16 pitchers to South Korea, with another on the way. Starting pitcher Dylan Cease, acquired in a trade shortly before the team departed Phoenix, was scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Saturday. The Padres' 31-man travel roster also includes three catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders. The roster has to be down to 26 players by 11 a.m. on March 20, six hours before the Padres open the season with the first of two games here against the Dodgers.
The other three can be designated as taxi squad members without any further transaction until March 28, when the rest of MLB opens the season. The Padres are expected to essentially carry an 11-man bullpen for the two-game series here. Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove are scheduled to start.
