President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller is more suited to scouting and wheeling and dealing than attempting to manage a big-league skipper
Whoever chose to bring Bob Melvin back for next season made the right decision. Melvin wasn’t to blame for the poor clutch hitting that, more than anything else, produced the most disappointing season in Padres history. Who, then — or what — caused the offense's epic futility in “high leverage” situations until the playoff race was all but over? Manny Machado’s explainer made the most sense if you want to pick one factor.
Have Preller focus more on what he reputedly does best: Scout amateur players and obtain baseball dope that can be used in trades and contractual negotiations. Have the GM handle all daily communications with Melvin and other field staff. While he’s at it, Seidler may want to assume a lower profile for himself, too, in one sense. He did Melvin no favors by telling everyone he signed Machado to the massive extension in spring training and describing his own close rapport with the third baseman.
