After Padres suffer another brutal setback, longest homestand of season begins against just the type of starting pitchers who give them trouble
Manny Machado has a default setting he goes to in many situations in which he only addresses what he wants to address.
The thing is, though, there is a giant chasm between hitting 1.000 and what the Padres are doing. And it is in that valley where the ruins of this Padres season will lie forever. Bob Melvin answered in the affirmative when asked whether he felt his team had the fortitude to continue fighting over the season’s final month-and-a-half. But he also allowed this:
I wrote about the reality of the Padres’ situation in yesterday’s newsletter. Every passing day makes the math harder. The Padres have bigger issues than who their 26th man is. But that the front office has been fine playing with 25 men is nonetheless disconcerting. The Padres are fighting from behind in the playoff chase. Every game, every out, every potential pinch-runner and every possible defensive replacement might be crucial. Every time they are in a blowout and starters could get a few innings off their feet could help. The team’s decision makers maintain that Carpenter has value as a veteran presence.
