Padres starter Joe Musgrove (shoulder, toe) throws 30-pitch bullpen, looking to make at least one more rehab start
Before throwing 30 or so pitches in the bullpen before Friday’s game, Joe Musgrove cycled through pitchers’ fielding practice, staged in lieu of on-field batting practice. Throw-overs to first and second base were an early focus — the Padres led the majors with 19 steals allowed entering the weekend — but all of their pitchers eventually rotated into fielding balls in front of the mound.
No, he was building up toward returning to the rotation after his fractured toe set him back this spring. The ensuing shoulder discomfort, though, has at least complicated his return. Musgrove required a cortisone shot three days after the play. An MRI did not real veal any structural damage to his shoulder capsule.
Musgrove threw Friday’s bullpen in the same-size shoes, too, because the toe is no longer an issue, he said. The team’s decision-makers will huddle with him on Saturday before determining if he’ll be able to get into another rehab game, perhaps as soon as Sunday or Tuesday. That would seemingly push his return to the Diamondbacks series April 20-23 in Phoenix at the earliest.
