Injured starting pitcher employing several methods in attempt to to be back for start of season, vows he'll return responsibly
Joe Musgrove drives 40 minutes every morning to lie for two hours inside a hyperbaric chamber in the hope that he can be back on a pitcher’s mound sooner than almost anyone expects.
Musgrove is adhering to a diet designed by Padres nutritionist Whitney Milano, full of iron and potassium and low on salt. It is his hope to join the team out of camp, but he knows he has to be prudent and will likely miss at least a start or two. Musgrove received X-rays that confirmed the initial expectation he will not require surgery. He plans to return to San Diego on Sunday night to see a specialist. Among the things he wants to know is when the nail, which is loose but attached at the cuticle, should be removed.
The important thing for Musgrove and the Padres is that he doesn’t come back too soon and alter his mechanics as a form of compensation, which could lead to injury elsewhere. While an injury to his left foot is better than his right foot, Musgrove has to be careful to maintain the proper alignment of his foot during his delivery.
Musgrove is trying to maintain the endurance level he was at with his arm. He threw two innings in a simulated game the day before his injury. He believes staying ready to go two innings will help him work through a progression back to the mound sooner. He has even talked to manager Bob Melvin about piggybacking with another pitcher the first time through the rotation.
