Left-hander Adrian Morejón has a 10-game scoreless streak; strep throat prevents Fernando Tatis Jr. from having surgery
Adrian Morejón walks like one of those bulldogs who appears to think he’s a much bigger dog, like you don’t want to mess with him.
First-year Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla has worked with Morejón on some postural repositioning to bring his arm and body in sync, as well as shortening his “arm action” for more efficiency and better timing. The Padres also have Morejón on a new throwing program with weighted balls to help protect against recurring shoulder issues.
He hasn’t allowed a run since July, a span of 10 appearances and 13 2/3 innings in which he has struck out 12, walked three and allowed 10 hits. He has also stranded both runners he has inherited. During the stretch, Morejón has worked in different innings and worked multiple innings. He has protected slim leads and preserved slim deficits.
Luis Campusano is tentatively scheduled to catch Joe Musgrove on Wednesday. With a day game after a night game, Austin Nola will not be Musgrove’s catcher for the first time this season. Tuesday’s starter, Blake Snell, tends to bounce a lot of breaking balls. That contributed to Melvin deciding to go with Nola rather than Campusano, who was called up Friday and has caught one major league game this season.
