Decision coming in a couple days regarding extra rest, altered role for rookie; Ha-Seong Kim expected to start Tuesday
It makes sense that this would be the time, given next week’s All-Star break, for rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore to get some extra rest.
It seems the Padres would lean toward Sean Manaea and Mike Clevinger pitching again this weekend on four days’ rest over subbing Nick Martinez in for Gore. Martinez has not started since June 18 and in his four highly effective bullpen appearances since then has not thrown more than 53 pitches or gone longer than 3 2/3 innings. He likely will be needed to pitch at least one of the four days in Colorado as well.
Gore has a 4.08 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings over 14 games . However, that can be dissected in two distinct portions of the season. He had a 1.50 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 57 strikeouts in his first 48 innings . In the five games since, he has a 10.18 ERA, 2.26 WHIP and 13 strikeouts over 20 1/3 innings.
“Unfortunately, he saves us yesterday and … we didn’t have to use another pitcher and he’s not available for a couple days,” Melvin said of Lamet. “It’s certainly hard to send the guy down that kind of saved you, but in this place you do need some length, and therefore Knehr is here.”
