Corey Rosier represents one half of the Padres' hopes to get something from ill-fated deal at deadline for Adam Frazier
Of the 30 minor leaguers considered by MLB.com to be among the Padres’ top 30 prospects in 2019, 18 have been traded.
The Padres received left-handed reliever Ray Kerr and outfielder Corey Rosier in the Nov. 27 deal that sent Frazier to the Mariners.Kerr, 27, is expected to be in the major league bullpen this season. He has yet to be able to show his 100 mph fastball on the Padres’ side of Peoria Sports Complex this spring, as he is on the 40-man roster and, thus, locked out.The 22-year-old Rosier, however, has been one of the early standouts inRosier, a 12-round pick by the Mariners last summer, hit .380/.
Especially with 2021 second-round pick James Wood also playing center field, there is talk Rosier could work in the corner outfield spots. He played center and then left in an intrasquad game Tuesday. He played center exclusively for Modesto but played some left field at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. If Kevin Kopps stays on the fast track to the major leagues the Padres believe is his path, Tuesday will have been a learning experience.
Kopps, the team’s third-round pick in 2021, was the Golden Spikes winner as college baseball’s top player after posting a Division I-low 0.90 ERA and striking out 131 in 89 2/3 innings at Arkansas. Tommy John surgery in 2017 contributed to his six-year stay in school.
