Starter Seth Lugo to face hitters Friday; reliever Luis Garcia scheduled to throw to hitters Wednesday; outfielder David Dahl designated for assignment
Xander Bogaerts hit in the cage, took grounders on the field and was, significantly, not placed on the injured list Tuesday despite not playing for a third straight game.
A team is able to backdate a 10-day IL start date no more than three days, which means every day the Padres wait now is essentially a wasted day if Bogaerts were eventually to go on the IL. Had he gone on the IL Tuesday, he would have missed just eight games because of the Padres’ two upcoming off days.“We still feel like we’re in a position to where he’s going to be back before what the IL period would do,” Melvin said.
“It just depends on how he feels today coming out of the cage,” Melvin said. “I know he took some ground balls earlier and felt pretty good there. But potentially there could be a benefit to that.”
