Padres turn to Pedro Avila to start Game 2 of the series against the Colorado Rockies
The 26-year-old has struck out seven against two hits and four walks over five shutout innings this year and has a 1.96 ERA over 18 1/3 innings in the majors dating back to 2019, before his Tommy John surgery. Avila has an 8.57 ERA in 55 2/3 innings this year at Triple-A El Paso, but it’s worth noting that 5.85 is the average ERA in the Pacific Coast League.
Avila does not have any history with current Rockies, nor has he ever pitched at Coors Field. He threw three shutout innings in another hitter-friendly environment in a bulk relief outing at Great American Ball Park earlier this month. He’s got a 6.61 ERA over 140 1/3 innings since making his debut in 2019, but he has allowed just one unearned run in 14 innings in the rotation this year. Opponents have a .451 OPS against him as a starter this year compared to 1.039 as a reliever.
